<front> Front Matter

Container element for the metadata of an article and the journal in which it was published.

Usage/Remarks

In this Tag Set, the <front> element is somewhat superfluous since it merely contains the element <article-meta> which is itself a container element for information about an article. It is assumed that one of the purposes of authoring using this Tag Set is for the article’s inclusion in PubMed Central. Because PubMed Central also receives material using other tag sets which use a front matter element to contain information about both an article and the journal in which it is published, the <front> element was retained in this Tag Set for consistency.

A journal article (<article>) may be divided into four components:
  1. <processing-meta> (the metadata that concerns the XML file rather than the contents of the document);
  2. the <front> (the metadata or header information for the article, such as the title and the published date);
  3. the <body> (textual and graphical content of the article); and
  4. any <back> (ancillary information such as a glossary, reference list, or appendix).
